An optical variable device (OVD) is based on diffractive optical structures. This gives the labels the appearance of having different patterns, colours, and designs depending on the amount of light striking the OVD and the angle the OVD is viewed at. Holograms are a type of OVD. The changes of appearance when rotating and tilting are reversible, predictable, and reproducible.

OVDs cannot be photocopied or scanned, nor can they be accurately replicated or reproduced. OVDs are often used as security devices and anti-counterfeiting measures and can be created through a combination of printing and embossing.

Anti-counterfeiting

To create built in security the labels can be designed with several Security Tamper Proof Types including once only use, pattern released tamper evident materials, serial numbers, de-metallisation, security slit, and special shape die cutting. Other label options to consider include many tamper proof types including destructive, VOID, ORIGINAL, Honeycomb, Transparent Tamper Evident, VOID Transparent Tamper Evident.

Other Security options could include Laser etching numbering/Logo/Text, opaque colour overprinted with logo/text/ number/ barcode/ QR code in UV ink etc, White colour over printing to allow scratch-off label/foil.

3 Dimensional Labels

The effect is creating using multiple layers and the lasers to apply the graphics.

A laser generated holographic image has depth and parallax and It uses two-dimensional artwork to build a three-dimensional picture.

Wines & spirits generally have their own unique signature as each, and every beverage is unique. However, it is not very convenient to open a bottle to learn if the spirits are counterfeited. Therefore, the label and the closure are the most widely used locations for anti-counterfeit measures. Anti-counterfeiting solutions are often used in combination with tamperproof labels and closures which avoids their refill.
